from the Lunar zine
OK, now when you walk around all day and a band's music starts to pop into your head because it is so goddamn catchy you can't help but to recommend their music to everyone that might like it. VESEN of Norway really took me by surprise with their latest CD "Ugly," and it hit me like a fucking brick. Like so many bands of the late, they are an amalgam of several styles including aspects of Black and Death Metal but they are a bit more Thrash oriented than anything else. The production is clear with everything shining through nicely. The drummer is rock solid, though I would probably tell him to keep his snare hits a little more consistent--they occasionally drift. The vocals are very original, and will be the first thing you will notice when you pop the disc in. Just imagine a real punky Nattefrost mixed with Aldrahn from newer DOMHEIMSGARD. The bass could stand to be turned up though as the guitars really over power it, but other than that I have no complaints with the production of "Ugly."
VESEN's music sounds like a diet AURA NOIR, but they aren't a carbon copy of their fellow Norsk brethren. They definitely have their own identity. But I feel that they sometimes are trying to be too original. The energy is really high, but it doesn't stay consistent and is occasionally castrated by a few melodic instances. Don't get me wrong I like melody, a lot, but I hate when bands try to be too many things at once. VESEN get off track here. I know they are trying to be versatile but it doesn't do their more heavy moments justice. Oh well, I can't have everything now can I? All in all, "Ugly" isn't ugly, it is actually quite good, and nowadays for fans of Black/Thrash you can't get much better.
Sounds like: AURA NOIR, DISIPLIN, CARPATHIAN FOREST, some bursts of ARCTURUS worship.
Stand-out tracks: "Taste my Disease," "Ugly," "Send me to Hell"
Most annoying track: "This Harmony"
