  1. Beyond Dawn
'We're Down With Species Of Any Kind'

Limited to 500 copies, Duplicate Records has issued a double album inscribed with ten remixes of eight tracks from their previous album, Frysh. Some tracks have been redone twice, but you’ll never notice the deja-vu since the labour courtesy of every single remix artist is exquisite – I’d go as far as to saying that these 12 individuals have achieved what Beyond Dawn failed to do with the first try. Even Beyond Dawn’s cover of Autopsy’s “Severed Survival” has been remixed – applause for such an initiative.

The agenda has many facets with this release; pounding bass beats dancing to the rhythm of percussive beats, or rejuvenated vocal lines guided by ambient samples or pure noise inferno similar to UlverÂ’s interpretation of own material, on their remix album.

The idea of remixing your music is hardly pristine territory; both Arcturus and Ulver have subjected themselves to such manipulation but the situation is obviously fortunate since Beyond DawnÂ’s material has benefited immensely from this electronic facelift.

I fail to explicitly categorize why Frysh left me in a state of confusion, but the sinister and dreary atmosphere of that album has been subdued by a lush ambience on the present remix album. To avoid potential misunderstandings, let me please stress in capitals that Beyond Dawn’s ambience doesn’t reflect any ‘happy-go-lucky joy’; this is music for the perceptive listener who willingly dares to take his mood on a journey on Beyond Dawn’s imaginative roller coaster.
